曾子曰:“吾日三省吾身:为人谋而不忠乎?与朋友交而不信乎?传不习乎?”Zeng Zi said, “There are three points on which I examine myself daily : Have I been conscientious in working for others ? Have I been truthful in my intercourse with my friends ? Have I practiced what I was taught? ” 子曰:“弟子入则孝,出则悌,谨而信,泛爱众而亲仁。行有余力,则以学文。”The Master said, “A young man should behave well to his parents at home and to elders abroad. He should be cautious but truthful. He should have charity in his heart for all men, but seek the intimacy of the virtuous. When all is done and he has energy to spare, let him study literary culture.” 子曰:“不患人之不己知,患不知人也。”The Master said, “I am not worried that other men do not know me; I am worried that I do not know other men.” 子曰:“道之以政,齐之以刑,民免而无耻;道之以德,齐之以礼,有耻且格。”The Master said, “If you guide the people by regulations and keep order by punishments, they may avoid doing what is wrong, but they will also self-respect. If you guide them by moral force and keep order among them by rites, they will keep their selt-respect, and come to you of their own accord.” 子曰:“君子不器。”The Master said, “A gentleman is not like an implement, which only has one specific use.” 子曰:“君子周而不比,小人比而不周。”The Master said, “A gentleman stresses unity, but he is free from collusion .The petty man does the reverse.” 子曰:“人而无信,不知其可也。”The Master said, “A man who lacks reliability can be good for nothing.” 子曰:“唯仁者能好人,能恶人。”The Master said, “Only a man of virtue knows how to love people and how to hate them.” 子曰:“士志于道,而耻恶衣恶食者,未足与议也。” The Master said, “I cannot discuss things with a learner whose heart is set upon the truth, but is the same time ashamed of poor clothes and bad food.” 子曰:“放于利而行,多怨。”The Master said, “He who works solely for his own benefit will arouse continual discontent.” 子曰:“父母在,不远游,游必有方。”The Master said, “While your parents are alive, do not wander far away; if you do so, go only where you have said you are going.” 子曰:“父母之年,不可不知也。一则以喜,一则以惧。”The Master said, “It is better for a man to bear the age of his parents in mind. On the one hand, he is pleased with their long life. On the other, he is worried about their decrepitude.” 子曰:“古者言之不出,耻躬之不逮也。”The Master said, “The ancients kept a hold on their words, fearing the disgrace that would ensue if they failed to keep pace with them.” 子游曰:“事君数,斯辱矣;朋友数,斯疏矣。”Zi Yoo said, “Too much fault-finding with the prince  will cause disgrace; with friends, it brings estrangement.” 子曰:“敏而好学,不耻下问,是以谓之‘文’也。”The Master said, “He was diligent and fond of learning, and he did not blush to learn from his inferiors. That is why he was called The Cultured.” 子曰:“老者安之,朋友信之,少者怀之。”The Master said, “My aspiration is that senior citizens live an easy life, friends have faith in me, and youth cherish the memory of me.” 子曰:“质胜文则野,文胜质则史。文质彬彬,然后君子。”The Master said, “When honesty overbalances refinement, crudeness results. When refinement overbalances honesty, there is superficiality. Only when refinement and honesty are duly balanced will gentlemen emerge.” 子曰:“知者乐水,仁者乐山。知者动,仁者静。知者乐,仁者寿。”The Master said, “The wise delight in water, the virtuous delight in mountains. The wise are active, the virtuous stay still. The wise are happy, the virtuous are long-lived.” 子曰:“夫仁者,己欲立而立人,己欲达而达人。能近取譬,可谓仁之方也已。”The Master said, “I would like to describe benevolence like this: You yourself desire standing, then help others to get standing. You yourself want success, then help others to attain success. To be able to draw analogies from oneself may be called benevolence.” 子曰:“志于道,据于德,依于仁,游于艺。”The Master said, “Set your heart upon rightousness, support yourself by virtue, lean upon benevolence, seek enjoyment and relaxation in the six arts.” 子曰:“三人行,必有我师焉。择其善者而从之,其不善者而改之。”The Master said, “When several men are walking together, I am sure there is one I learn from. I’d select his merits to follow, and his demerits for reference to correct my own.”
